Sunday, April 1, 2012

Can't believe more than month has passed since I updated.  Well, a lot has transpired since then but I'll see if I can sum it up.

Everything was on track for another embryo transfer on April 6th.  I was on the meds, had the laminaria procedure (a very big ouch), flights, hotel and rental car were all booked.  Then I went for the routine ultrasound to check the thickness of my uterine lining and everything got turned upside down.  I have known I had one fibroid for years but I now have three of those buggers and at least one of them is growing, impinging on my uterus and causing distortion of the lining.  The fibroids feed on estrogen so it's no surprise that they are growing and now problematic, given that my estrogen levels at times are 10 times normal with all the meds I've taken.  So the embryo transfer was cancelled and instead I'm preparing for fibroid removal surgery. At first I was pretty upset but once I've thought it all through it makes sense to remove them and give me the best possible chance for a successful pregnancy and healthy baby.  Originally this surgery was going to occur in CO but things have changed and I'm looking into having it done locally.  The change of location is a whole story in itself but I'll spare you all those details.

I have an appointment with a local gynecologic oncologist on April 9th.  The oncologist because they have the most experience at removing tumors and a fibroid is just that, a benign tumor.  Surgery has not been scheduled yet as we need a few more pieces of info and I have to donate two units of blood "just in case."   I'll post again when I have a date.

After surgery I'll have to wait up to 3 1/2 months before having another embryo transfer.  It could be a little sooner depending on how involved the surgery is.  And I'll have to repeat that laminaria, something I hoped to never have to endure again.  But I know that one day it'll all be worth it as I rock a sweet baby to sleep at night.  So I'm trying to look at this as a speed bump in my journey, albeit a rather big one, and certainly not a dead end.  All prayers and good thoughts are appreciated.
